The frame decides whether the vial still tells the truth in a year
A spirit level is a straightedge with a vial in it, and both halves fail differently. The vial carries the stated accuracy, usually expressed in millimeters per meter; the frame decides whether that vial is still square to the working edge after a drop. Milled aluminum box sections hold better than folded profiles, which is most of the price difference. A long level reads flatness across its whole span. A short one follows local irregularities and says nothing about the whole.

A vial glued into a thin section shifts at the first drop and nothing says so. Stated adjustable or lifetime-guaranteed vials are what make the tool checkable.
Set it on a surface, note the bubble, turn the level end for end in the same spot. If the bubble moves, the level is wrong.
As long as possible for the surface being checked. A short level on a large plane follows the hollows instead of revealing them.
One drop or knock is enough. That is why the end-for-end check should be done regularly, not once.
