Stated accuracy matters less than how you brace the back edge
A laser distance meter is bought on three numbers the maker publishes: accuracy (typically stated as ± 1.5 mm (0.06 in) to ± 3 mm (0.12 in)), maximum range, and the ingress rating that decides whether it survives a site. The number people over-weight is accuracy; the one that actually moves a reading is the reference edge — measuring from the back of the housing, the front, or a fold-out stop changes every figure by the length of the body. The stated range decides what you can aim at. Beyond it, the instrument simply returns no measurement at all.
A modest range amply covers the inside of a home, in a more compact and cheaper instrument.
A red dot vanishes on a pale wall at ten meters outdoors. A stated optical viewfinder or a target plate decides outdoor use.
It assumes a light target and little ambient light. In full sun on a dark surface, the usable range is distinctly shorter.
From the back or the front of the housing depending on the setting chosen. A reference error skews every measurement by the same amount.
The target is too dark, too shiny or too far away. A white target plate settles most of those cases.
These instruments are in a low class and must never be pointed at the eyes. A basic precaution, not a formality.
The indirect functions calculate it from two or three measurements. The accuracy then depends on how carefully you aim.
Over long distances the hand shakes enough to move the dot. A rest or a tripod distinctly improves repeatability.
The operating temperature ranges are given. Below them, the display and the battery fail.
The reference point is set in the device and can be the front, the back or the folded-out foot. Measuring without checking that setting gives a constant error of the body's length.
The stated range assumes a light target and little light: in full sun it collapses. Check the measuring reference point — an error there skews every measurement at once — and a white target plate settles most refusals to measure.
A column is raised only if four instruments in five publish the value. Below that, it would be measuring the silence of the manuals.
