The best test leads and probes for 2026

Test leads are the part of a meter that gets stood on, and they carry a stated category and voltage of their own: fitting unrated leads to a CAT III meter gives you a CAT III meter with unrated leads, and the manufacturer's rating for the pair is the lower of the two. Silicone insulation stays flexible in the cold where PVC goes stiff and cracks. We compare stated ratings, insulation, shrouded plugs, tip length, and the crocodile clips, hooks and magnets included.

What we recommend

  1. PeakTech TKS-4 test leads coiled, showing their angled banana plugs and probe tips

PeakTech Test leads, 120 cm (47.2 in), 4 mm (0.16 in) banana

A plain replacement pair for any meter with 4 mm (0.16 in) sockets, with insulated angled plugs and 18 mm (0.71 in) tips — and no published category rating, unlike the rated American sets on this shelf.

  4. Klein Tools 69410 right-angle test leads with removable alligator clips

Klein Tools Right-angle lead set, CAT III 1000 V

A plain rated pair — and the rating is the whole point, because the three European sets on this shelf publish none.

    Stated rating
CATEGORY III 1000 V AND CATEGORY IV 600 V, stated in a bullet. This shelf's introduction is explicit about why that matters: "fitting unrated leads to a CAT III meter gives you a CAT III meter with unrated leads, and the manufacturer's rating for the pair is the lower of the two". The three European sets previously on this shelf publish no category at all; this is one of three sets here that reach CAT IV
    Insulation
NOT NAMED. The listing says the leads are durable and says nothing about silicone or PVC — and this shelf's introduction makes that comparison one of its five: silicone stays flexible in the cold where PVC goes stiff and cracks. All three Klein sets share the omission, which is odd on a product whose own description stresses that it is designed by electricians for electricians
    Plugs and tips
Right-angle, "standard banana-type inputs compatible with most multimeters and clamp meters". No tip length is published and the plugs are not described as shrouded. A right-angle plug is the detail that keeps a meter from being levered off a ledge by its own leads, and it is why these fit Klein's own lead storage compartments
    Length
41 inches, 104 cm, stated. That sits below the published PeakTech's 120 cm (47.2 in) and well below the PUKAIBUL's 125 cm (49.2 in) on this shelf, and above the 3 ft (91 cm) of the two other Klein sets
    Supplied
One pair of universal test leads and one set of REMOVABLE alligator clips. Removable is the useful word: the clips come off, so one purchase covers a probe measurement and a hands-free one. 91 grams
    Also stated
The leads "are compatible with and fit the lead storage compartment on most Klein test and measurement products" — which is a specification about the METER rather than the lead, and the only one of its kind on this shelf. Klein also offers insulation resistance testing as an application of its heavy-duty sibling, the 69381

  5. Klein Tools 69381 heavy-duty alligator clip test leads

Klein Tools Heavy-duty clip leads, 18 AWG, 3 ft

A clip-only lead in 18 AWG — the one set here that tells you the size of the wire inside it.

    Stated rating
CAT III 1000 V / CAT IV 600 V, stated. The same pairing as the two other Klein sets, and the three of them are the only CAT IV items on this shelf. This shelf's introduction explains the arithmetic: the rated pair is the lower of meter and leads
    Insulation
18 AWG DOUBLE INSULATED WIRE, stated — and the gauge is what makes this listing unusual. No other product on this shelf publishes a wire gauge at all. What it does NOT say is the material: not silicone, not PVC, just double insulated, as on both other Klein sets
    Plugs and tips
Banana plug at one end, HEAVY-DUTY ALLIGATOR CLIP at the other, right-angle at the plug. There is no probe tip: this is a clip-only lead, which is a different purchase from the 69410 beside it where the clips unscrew. No shrouding is mentioned
    Length
3 feet, 91 cm — the shortest of the three Klein sets and the shortest stated lead on this shelf. Against the PUKAIBUL's 125 cm (49.2 in) and the published PeakTech's 120 cm (47.2 in), that is a third less reach
    Stated application
INSULATION RESISTANCE TESTING, named in a bullet as "a perfect application for heavy-duty leads". That is a specific and sensible claim: an insulation test applies hundreds of volts between a conductor and earth for a minute at a time, which is a job for a clip that stays put rather than a probe held by hand
    Supplied
One pair of universal right-angle leads with heavy-duty clips. The clips are not described as removable, which is the trade against the 69410: more clip, less versatility, same price to within two cents — $19.99 against $19.97

  6. Klein Tools 69483 meter test lead accessory kit laid out with its case

Klein Tools Meter accessory kit with 3 ft extenders

The only set here that extends: three feet of lead plus three feet of adapter, in a case you can wear.

    Stated rating
CAT III 1000 V / CAT IV 600 V, stated — the same pairing as the two other Klein sets, and these three are the only CAT IV items on this shelf. The rating is given for the kit rather than itemized per part, which is worth noting on a set whose whole point is that the parts screw together
    Length and reach
3-FOOT right-angle lantern-style leads PLUS 3-FOOT extension adapters — six feet, 183 cm, assembled. That is the longest reach on this shelf by a clear margin: the longest single lead here is the PUKAIBUL at 125 cm (49.2 in) and the published PeakTech is 120 cm (47.2 in). A meter hung on a magnet at the side of a cabinet while the probes reach the far end of a board is what this buys
    Plugs and tips
Right-angle, LANTERN-STYLE tips, with removable threaded lead HEADS that connect either directly to the right-angle leads or to the extenders. A lantern tip is a sprung sleeve round the probe that grips a terminal rather than resting against it. No shrouding is described for the plugs
    Insulation
NOT NAMED, as on both other Klein sets. This shelf's introduction compares silicone against PVC for cold flexibility, and this listing describes the case in more detail than the cable
    Supplied
Two right-angle leads, two extenders, two removable lead heads, two screw-on alligator clips, and a carrying case with elastic straps for the heads, pockets for the leads and a BELT LOOP. Nine pieces and a case. 322 grams — the heaviest Klein item on this shelf
    Also stated
Klein positions it as "an upgrade or replacement lead kit compatible with clamp meters, multimeters, or other test equipment with standard lead connections". The threaded heads are the mechanism that makes the kit modular: a clip, a probe head and an extender all take the same thread

  7. Fluke TL175 TwistGuard test leads with extendable tip shrouds

Fluke TwistGuard leads with wear indication

The only leads here that show you their own wear — and, at $33.83, one of two sets that never name a category.

    Stated rating
NO CATEGORY NAMED. The listing says the TwistGuard shroud "meets the highest electrical safety requirements" and never writes CAT II, III or IV, nor a voltage. This shelf's tag line is "the leads carry the same CAT rating as the meter, or they do not", and at $33.83 it is among the most expensive sets here — the Bionso at $29.99 also names no category. Three Klein sets here publish CAT III 1000 V and CAT IV 600 V in a bullet
    Insulation
DOUBLE INSULATED SILICONE, and the second layer does a job: "WearGuard lead wire wear indication. Each test lead is covered by two layers of silicone insulation; inner contrasting color is exposed when the leads are nicked, scuffed, or otherwise damaged and in need of replacement." Stated to withstand high temperatures and remain flexible in cold, with no figures. Extra-heavy-duty strain relief at both the probe end and the plug end
    Plugs and tips
2 mm (0.08 in) probe tips with a PATENTED TWISTGUARD EXTENDABLE TIP SHROUD: twist the shroud and the amount of exposed metal changes, so the same probe suits a shrouded terminal and an open test point. Removable 4 mm (0.16 in) LANTERN TIPS thread on. The input plugs are "standard 4 mm (0.16 in) SHROUDED banana plugs" — the only listing on this shelf that calls its plugs shrouded, which this shelf's introduction names among its five comparisons
    Durability
TESTED BEYOND 30,000 BENDS WITHOUT FAILURE, stated. It is the only durability figure published on this shelf, and it is the right figure for the part this shelf's introduction calls "the part of a meter that gets stood on". The strain relief is called out separately at both ends, which is where a lead actually dies
    Length
NOT PUBLISHED. Every other set here that states a length gives one — 91 cm (35.8 in), 103 cm (40.6 in), 104 cm (40.9 in), 109 cm (42.9 in), 125 cm (49.2 in), 1 m (3 ft) — and this one does not, on a page that otherwise publishes more than any of them
    Also stated
120 grams. Fluke writes that the TL175 "are the only test leads as tough as your meter", which is a claim about the pairing rather than a specification. The whole listing is built on two named technologies, a bend count and a shroud, and omits the category and the length

  8. PUKAIBUL silicone multimeter test lead kit with needle probes and piercing pins

PUKAIBUL Silicone lead kit, 125 cm (49.2 in), CAT III 1000 V

The longest lead on this shelf and the cheapest published CAT III rating here, at ten dollars.

    Stated rating
CAT III 1000 V 20 A, stated twice on the page. At $9.99 that makes it the CHEAPEST published CAT III rating on this shelf — a third of the Fluke, which names no category, and half the Klein pairs, which reach CAT IV. This shelf's introduction makes the stated rating the first comparison, and the three European sets on this shelf publish none
    Insulation
SILICONE, stated, "soft insulation remains flexible and helps reduce tangling during use". No temperature figures are given — the Eiranoly is the only product on this shelf that publishes an operating range. Silicone is the material this shelf's introduction prefers, against PVC that stiffens and cracks in cold
    Length
49 inches, 125 cm, stated — the LONGEST single lead on this shelf. The published PeakTech is 120 cm (47.2 in), the Klein 69410,104 cm, the Bionso 109 cm (42.9 in) and the two other Klein sets 91 cm (35.8 in). Only the Klein 69483 reaches further, and only by screwing a three-foot extender onto a three-foot lead
    Plugs and tips
Standard 4 mm (0.16 in) banana jacks, with GOLD-PLATED sharp probe tips built into the leads. The kit adds two extended 2 mm (0.08 in) needle probes and two non-destructive PIERCING PROBES with 0.7 mm (0.03 in) needle tips, which push through insulation to read a conductor without stripping it. Four protective caps. The plugs are not described as shrouded
    Supplied
Two 49-inch leads with built-in probes, two piercing probes with 4 mm (0.16 in) banana jacks, two 2 mm (0.08 in) extended needle probes, two alligator clips, four caps and a transparent case — ten pieces for $9.99. 180 grams. Stated to fit "most digital multimeters including Fluke, AstroAI, and Klein"
    Also stated
The listing's first bullet carries a stray closing quotation mark, and the kit's name appears three different ways across the page ("meter leads", "multimeter leads kit", "replacement multimeter probes"). The specification itself is consistent: 49 inches, CAT III 1000 V, 20 A, silicone, 0.7 mm (0.03 in) piercing needles, 2 mm (0.08 in) needle probes

  9. Eiranoly silicone multimeter test leads with alligator clips and probe covers

Eiranoly Silicone lead pair, CAT II 1000 V, 103 cm (40.6 in)

The cheapest set on this shelf, the only one that publishes a temperature range — and the only CAT II leads with a 1000 V figure beside it.

    Stated rating
CAT II 1000 V, 20 A, stated. That is the point to read carefully, because the buying tip on the multimeter shelf of this site puts it exactly: the category and the voltage are one specification, not two, and the higher-looking number is not the safer tool. CAT II 1000 V is a LOWER category than the CAT III 1000 V of the PUKAIBUL at $9.99 and the CAT III 1000 V / CAT IV 600 V of the three Klein sets — and fitting these to a CAT III meter gives you, per this shelf's introduction, a CAT II pairing
    Insulation
DOUBLE-INSULATED SILICONE, with the only OPERATING TEMPERATURE RANGE published anywhere on this shelf: −58 °F to +392 °F, −50 °C to +200 °C (392 °F). This shelf's introduction compares silicone against PVC for cold flexibility and no other listing here puts a number on it — the Fluke says "remain flexible in cold temperatures" without one
    Length
40.5 inches, 103 cm, stated. Mid-length for this shelf: shorter than the PUKAIBUL's 125 cm (49.2 in) and the published PeakTech's 120 cm (47.2 in), a centimeter under the Klein 69410's 104 cm (40.9 in), longer than the 91 cm (35.8 in) of the two other Klein sets
    Plugs and tips
Gold-plated ULTRA-SHARP probes, stated to pierce wire insulation or reach a solder joint on a dense board, and "a universal 4.2mm (0.17 in)(0.16inch) banana plug". Two figures that do not agree: 0.16 inch is 4.06 mm (0.16 in), and the standard every other listing on this shelf names is 4 mm (0.16 in). A plug genuinely 4.2 mm (0.17 in) across would be a tight fit in a 4 mm (0.16 in) socket; the likeliest reading is that this is a standard 4 mm (0.16 in) plug described loosely
    Supplied
One red lead, one black lead, one red clip, one black clip and FOUR probe safety covers — two more than needed, and the listing explains why: "customers have reported that they are easily lost, so we've included 2 extra probe covers". That is the only listing on this shelf that changed its contents because of what buyers said. 77 grams, the lightest set on this shelf
    Also stated
Compatible with "almost all mainstream brands of multimeters and clamp meters such as Fluke, AstroAI, INNOVA, Klein Tools". Stated to be tangle-resistant and stretch-resistant. At $6.79 it is the cheapest item on this shelf

  10. Bionso 25-piece multimeter test lead kit with interchangeable gold-plated probes

Bionso 25-piece probe kit with threaded tips

Five tip sizes, two hooks, two back probes and a wrench to swap them — and not a single rating figure on the page.

    Stated rating
NO CATEGORY AND NO VOLTAGE PUBLISHED. Twenty-five pieces, $29.99, five bullets of specification, and not one figure for category, voltage or current. It is one of five sets on this shelf that publish no category at all, with the Fluke TL175, the AUTOOL kit, the KAIWEETS set and the PeakTech pair. This shelf's introduction makes stated ratings the first of its five comparisons, and the published PeakTech fiche on this shelf says a rating should be in the listing
    Insulation
SILICONE, "cold and high temperature resistant, very soft, more flexible use", double insulated, with "100 high-purity copper wire" — a phrase that is presumably meant to read 100 per cent. No temperature figures and no gauge. Silicone is the material this shelf's introduction prefers over PVC
    Plugs and tips
REPLACEABLE gold-plated probes in five sizes: four at 1.0 mm (0.04 in), two at 2.0 mm (0.08 in), two 3.8 mm (0.15 in) banana plug probes and two 0.7 mm (0.03 in) back probe pins, plus two test HOOKS that clip onto a component leg and stay there. Two TIP SHROUDS are included — cover for the exposed metal, which only the Fluke otherwise addresses on this shelf, and here as a separate part rather than an adjustable sleeve
    Length
43 inches, 109 cm, for the two leads. Mid-length on this shelf: under the PUKAIBUL's 125 cm (49.2 in) and the published PeakTech's 120 cm (47.2 in), over the Klein 69410's 104 cm (40.9 in)
    Supplied
Two 43-inch leads, two handles, four 1.0 mm (0.04 in) probes, two 2.0 mm (0.08 in) probes, two 3.8 mm (0.15 in) banana plug probes, two 0.7 mm (0.03 in) back probe pins, two alligator clips, two tip shrouds, ONE WRENCH, two test hooks and two storage boxes. Twenty-five pieces. The wrench is the only tool supplied with anything on this shelf, and it exists because threaded tips have to be nipped up rather than finger-tight. 210 grams
    Also stated
A three-month refund and a two-year warranty, both stated. Bionso claims the kit "works perfectly with any multimeter, clamp meter or test instrument", which is a compatibility claim and not a rating. Compared with the published AUTOOL set on this shelf, which runs to 68 pieces, this is the smaller of the two big kits

  11. Linkhood 31-piece back probe kit with colored stainless probes and alligator clips

Linkhood Back probe kit, 31 pieces, 30 V

A kit built entirely around reading a connector from behind, rated 30 volts — the lowest on this shelf by a factor of thirty.

    Stated rating
TWO RATINGS ON ONE PAGE. The back probes are stated for "testing up to 30 Volts for Connectors, Automotive Sensors and Fuel Injectors", and the alligator clips separately as "CATII 300Vac/15A". The description then gives "Rated Voltage: 30V" for the kit. Thirty volts is the LOWEST figure on this shelf by a factor of thirty, and it is the right one to believe: a kit is rated by its weakest part, and these are 0.07 mm (0.003 in) needles
    Insulation
SOFT PVC, stated — "Cable Material: Soft PVC". It is the ONLY product on this shelf whose insulation is named as PVC, and this shelf's introduction says in so many words that silicone "stays flexible in the cold where PVC goes stiff and cracks". Five sets on this shelf name silicone; the three Klein sets name nothing; this one names the material the hub warns about
    Probes and angles
15 BACK PROBE PINS in stainless steel, at THREE angles — 90°, 135° and straight — in five colors, with 0.07 mm (0.003 in) needle tips. Three angles is the specification that makes the kit: a connector you can reach from directly behind takes a straight pin, one in a loom against a bulkhead takes 90°, and 135° is for everything in between. No other product on this shelf offers an angle at all
    Plugs and tips
4 mm (0.16 in) banana plugs, stated. Five banana-plug-to-alligator-clip leads, five WIRE PIERCING PROBES that connect to the banana leads, and five nickel-plated copper alligator clips with a maximum jaw opening of 15 mm (0.59 in). The piercing probes work through a white plastic case: the wire goes in the case and the probe pierces it, which keeps the pierced spot located and the needle supported
    Length
39.37 inches, 1 meter, for each of the FIVE leads. Five leads rather than two is unusual on this shelf and it is deliberate: diagnosing a sensor often means holding a reference, a signal and a ground at once, across two instruments
    Supplied
31 pieces: 15 back probe pins, 5 banana-to-clip leads, 5 wire piercing probes, 5 alligator clips, and a storage box. 230 grams, $20.37. Stated for "Automotive Diagnostics, Testing, and Repairing, but also used in Physics Laboratories, Service Shops, Schools, Homes, and Industries"

Need by need, within test leads and probes

Leads that match the instrument

The measurement category of a set is that of its weakest link. Poor leads cancel out the instrument's protection.

AUTOOL Multimeter Leads Kit

Replacing a damaged lead

A cut or split lead is replaced immediately: it is the part that puts the operator in contact with the circuit.

Eiranoly E-67-001

Who each family suits, across test leads and probes

Measuring on an installation
The category, the quality of the insulation and the finger guards are safety features. This is where they count.
Electronics
Fine tips and crocodile clips make work on a printed circuit board easier. Voltages stay low.
Prolonged measurement
Crocodile clips free your hands to watch something over time. Holding two probes rules out any other action.

What you gain and what you give up, on test leads and probes

Original leads against generic ones
A generic lead with no credible marking offers no guarantee of withstanding an overvoltage. On this part, the saving is paid for in safety.
Fine tips against robustness
A fine tip reaches a tiny test point and bends or breaks. Interchangeable tips settle the trade-off.
Long leads reach the board and tangle
Long leads let you keep the instrument away from the point being measured, which is safer. They tangle and snag more.

Frequent questions on test leads and probes

Do the leads matter as much as the instrument?

Just as much: the category of the set is that of the weakest link. A good multimeter with poor leads does not offer the protection stated.

How do I check leads?

On continuity, with the leads flexed along their whole length. An intermittent internal break cannot be seen and gives a misleading zero reading.

What are the finger guards for?

To stop the hand sliding towards the tip. It is protection against a reflex movement, not a comfort detail.

Do I need retractable tips?

Caps and retractable tips limit exposed metal, which reduces the risk of an accidental short between two close points.

What do I do with split insulation?

Replace the lead, with no makeshift repair. Tape does not restore insulation.

Are crocodile clips safe?

At high voltages they expose more metal. Their category has to match the point being worked on.

Should leads be stored tightly coiled?

A tight coil breaks the strands over time. Wide loops extend a lead's life.

How do you know a lead has failed?

Measure its resistance with the two tips together: a sound lead gives a stable fraction of an ohm, a lead broken inside jumps at the slightest movement. That check takes ten seconds.

What stays with you, on test leads and probes

The category of a measuring set is that of its weakest link: poor leads cancel out the instrument's protection. Check continuity with the leads flexed — an internal break gives a misleading zero reading — and split insulation is replaced, never repaired.

Summed up: test leads and probes

Test leads and probes, side by side

There is no table here, and the reason is in the listings. The figure published most often across these 11 products is insulation, given by 8 of them — short of the four in five a column needs to compare rather than to display gaps. Each product page says what its own maker published.
