Klein Tools 69381 heavy-duty alligator clip test leads

Klein Tools Heavy-duty clip leads, 18 AWG, 3 ft

A clip-only lead in 18 AWG — the one set here that tells you the size of the wire inside it.

Stated rating
CAT III 1000 V / CAT IV 600 V, stated. The same pairing as the two other Klein sets, and the three of them are the only CAT IV items on this shelf. This shelf's introduction explains the arithmetic: the rated pair is the lower of meter and leads
Insulation
18 AWG DOUBLE INSULATED WIRE, stated — and the gauge is what makes this listing unusual. No other product on this shelf publishes a wire gauge at all. What it does NOT say is the material: not silicone, not PVC, just double insulated, as on both other Klein sets
Plugs and tips
Banana plug at one end, HEAVY-DUTY ALLIGATOR CLIP at the other, right-angle at the plug. There is no probe tip: this is a clip-only lead, which is a different purchase from the 69410 beside it where the clips unscrew. No shrouding is mentioned
Length
3 feet, 91 cm — the shortest of the three Klein sets and the shortest stated lead on this shelf. Against the PUKAIBUL's 125 cm (49.2 in) and the published PeakTech's 120 cm (47.2 in), that is a third less reach
Stated application
INSULATION RESISTANCE TESTING, named in a bullet as "a perfect application for heavy-duty leads". That is a specific and sensible claim: an insulation test applies hundreds of volts between a conductor and earth for a minute at a time, which is a job for a clip that stays put rather than a probe held by hand
Supplied
One pair of universal right-angle leads with heavy-duty clips. The clips are not described as removable, which is the trade against the 69410: more clip, less versatility, same price to within two cents — $19.99 against $19.97

NO insulation material. No jaw opening. No probe tip.

The only gauge on this shelf

Eighteen AWG.

Nothing else here — published or American, kit or pair — says how thick the copper is.

About a square millimeter. Substantial for a test lead, which is the whole claim behind “heavy-duty”, and the reason the listing points at insulation testing.

The trade is in the hand: a heavier conductor in a three-foot lead does not fold into a pouch as willingly as thin silicone.

Clips only, and they do not come off

Which is the choice between this and the 69410 beside it, two cents apart.

The 69410: probe pair, REMOVABLE clips, 104 cm (40.9 in). Both modes, one purchase.

This: clips, heavier, 91 cm (35.8 in).

If the reading is one you walk away from, the heavier jaw earns its place. If you want one set of leads for everything, buy the other.

Named for the job it is actually right for

“Insulation resistance testing is a perfect application for heavy-duty leads.”

An insulation tester puts 250, 500 or 1000 volts between a conductor and earth and holds it for up to a minute.

So the lead needs the voltage rating with margin — CAT III 1000 V — and you need to be nowhere near the probe end while it is live.

A clip you attach before energizing is the right end for that. A hand-held probe is not.

Three feet is the short end of this shelf

The PUKAIBUL gives 125 cm (49.2 in). The published PeakTech 120 cm (47.2 in). The 69410,104 cm (27326812.6 in).

This is 91.

On a consumer unit that is enough. Under a dashboard with the meter on the seat, it is not.

What gets asked here

Why publish a wire gauge?

Because it is the figure that decides how much current the lead can carry and how stiff it feels, and nothing else on this shelf gives one. Eighteen AWG is about a square millimeter of copper — substantial for a test lead, which is why the listing calls them heavy-duty, and the reason they suit insulation testing where a clip sits in place under voltage for a minute. The trade is handling: a heavier conductor in a three-foot lead is less willing to be folded into a pouch than a thin silicone one.

Is this or the 69410 the one to buy?

They are two cents apart and they are not the same tool. The 69410 is a probe pair with REMOVABLE clips: you get both modes from one purchase and 104 cm (40.9 in) of lead. This is clips only, in 18 AWG, at 91 cm (35.8 in), with heavier jaws. If you need a reading you can walk away from — an insulation test, a voltage watched while an engine cranks — the heavier clip is worth having. If you need one set of leads to do everything, the 69410 is the one.

What makes a lead right for insulation resistance testing?

The voltage and the time. An insulation tester applies 250, 500 or 1000 volts between a conductor and earth and holds it for up to a minute while the reading settles. That means the lead has to be rated for that voltage with margin — CAT III 1000 V here — and it means you want to be nowhere near the probe end while it is live. A clip you attach before energizing, and which will not fall off a terminal halfway through, is the right end for the job. A hand-held probe is not.
