What the manufacturer publishes

Why the published figure is the point
Most meters at this price advertise their range and their mode count. Range is easy — the diode does not care whether the wall is at 20 m (66 ft) or 50 m (164 ft) — and mode count is a software list. The figure that decides whether two readings of the same wall agree is accuracy, and it is the one most listings in this band leave out. RockSeed states ± 2 mm (0.08 in). Whether the tool holds that is the maker’s claim to defend; what matters here is that the claim exists and can be checked against a manual.
The two vials are not decoration
A laser meter reports the distance along its beam. Point it slightly off square and the reading is longer than the wall, always — never shorter. The two vials let you level the body before pressing, which removes the one error that a beginner makes every time and never notices.
