OX Mechanical carpenter pencil, 2.8 mm (0.11 in), steel feed tube

The only marker here with a steel feed tube — which is the part a 2.8 mm (0.11 in) lead actually breaks in.

Material
Built from PP, ABS and STAINLESS STEEL, stated, with a stainless steel FEED TUBE described as making lead changes fast and easy. It is the only metal named inside any marker on this shelf, and the feed tube is the part that matters: a plastic tube wears oval and then the lead wobbles, which on a needle-nose tip is the end of precision
Functions
A one-click system dispensing 2.8 mm (0.11 in) lead, stated for clean consistent lines and built for repeat use. One click per advance is a small thing that decides whether you can feed lead with one hand while the other holds a square
Stated dimension or range
An EXTRA-LONG NEEDLE-NOSE TIP for tight precise marking, stated — with no figure. The marker beside it on this shelf publishes 6 mm (0.24 in) by 45 mm (1.77 in), so the comparison cannot be made: extra-long against what, and down a hole of what diameter, is left to the photograph
Supplied
Four leads, stated, and refillable with OX Tuff Carbon 2.8 mm (0.11 in) leads. Four is the fewest on this shelf, where the others ship six, seven or ten — and naming the refill product by name is the useful half: a 2.8 mm (0.11 in) marker with no named refill is a marker you guess refills for
Body and fittings
A built-in sharpener AND a belt clip, stated to keep the pencil on a tool rig or a pocket. It is one of two markers here with a clip rather than a holster, and the sharpener is in the body rather than in a separate part to lose
Also stated
Marks on wood, steel, tile, concrete and stone. No lead HARDNESS and no lead Color is published — the Tuff Carbon name suggests graphite, and this shelf's introduction says graphite disappears on dark stone, which is on OX's own list of surfaces

What the maker puts in writing

  • Built from durable PP, ABS and stainless steel
  • “The stainless steel feed tube makes switching leads fast and easy”
  • One-click system dispenses 2.8 mm (0.11 in) lead · built for repeat use
  • “Extra-long needle-nose tip for tight, precise marking”
  • Refillable with OX Tuff Carbon 2.8 mm (0.11 in) leads · 4 leads supplied · accepts 2.8 mm (0.11 in) replacement leads
  • Built-in sharpener and belt clip · marks on wood, steel, tile and more

No tip figure. No lead color. No lead hardness.

Steel where the lead runs

Which is the part these markers fail in.

A 2.8 mm (0.11 in) lead is pushed through a narrow tube at the tip. Every advance drags grit and graphite dust along it.

A plastic tube wears oval. The lead then wobbles, and the fine point the needle nose exists to deliver becomes a vague one.

Stainless does not wear that way — and it lets a snapped lead be pushed out rather than picked out.

OX is the only maker on this shelf to say what the feed tube is made of. The others name no internal material at all.

Extra-long against what

The one real gap on this page.

The marker beside it on this shelf publishes 6 mm (0.24 in) diameter and 45 mm (1.77 in) length.

That tells you which hole the tip enters and how far it reaches. “Extra-long needle-nose” tells you neither.

Measure the hole you need to reach, and ask for the figure.

One click, one hand

Which sounds trivial and is not.

The other hand is holding a square, or a board, or a ladder.

A marker that needs two hands to feed lead gets put down, and a marker put down on a round barrel rolls.

And Tuff Carbon is graphite

Which is the thing to weigh.

OX lists stone and concrete among its surfaces. This shelf’s introduction says graphite disappears on dark stone, where white or red shows.

The marker on this shelf that ships yellow and red leads names exactly those surfaces for them.

2.8 mm (0.11 in) is a standard diameter, so colored leads bought separately will fit this body. Which is the fix, and it costs extra.

What gets asked here

Why does a steel feed tube matter?

Because it is the part a mechanical marker fails in. A 2.8 mm (0.11 in) lead is pushed through a narrow tube at the tip, and every advance drags grit and graphite dust along it — a plastic tube wears oval, the lead starts to wobble, and the fine point that the needle nose exists to deliver becomes a vague one. Stainless steel does not wear that way, and it also lets a snapped lead be pushed out rather than picked out. OX is the only maker on this shelf to say what the feed tube is made of; the others name no internal material at all.

How long is "extra-long"?

OX does not say, which is the one real gap here. The marker beside it on this shelf publishes 6 mm (0.24 in) diameter and 45 mm (1.77 in) length, which tells you both which hole the tip enters and how far it reaches — and "extra-long needle-nose" tells you neither. This shelf's buying tip is about matching the mark to the tolerance; the tip geometry is the other half of that, because a tip that will not enter the hole cannot mark the bottom of it. Measure the hole you need to reach and ask the seller for the figure.

Will the Tuff Carbon lead show on dark stone?

Probably not well, and the listing does not address it. Carbon means graphite, which marks a dark grey line — and OX lists stone and concrete among its surfaces while this shelf's introduction says graphite disappears on dark stone, where white or red shows. The marker on this shelf that ships yellow and red leads names exactly those surfaces for them. If the work is dark concrete or slate, buy a marker whose colored leads are specified, or buy colored 2.8 mm (0.11 in) leads separately: the diameter is standard, so they will fit this body.
