What length spirit level should I buy?

A level reports the two points under its ends. That is why length is the specification.

What each length is for

  • 20–30 cm (7.9 to 11.8 in) — appliance leveling, picture hanging, checking a short shelf. Fits a drawer.
  • 60 cm (23.6 in) — the general-purpose length. Between studs, across a worktop, along a fitting.
  • 100 cm (39.4 in) and up — door frames, walls, anything where a shorter level would read a local bump.

Why too short is a real error

Bridge a short level across a longer run and it reports the two points it happens to touch. On a bowed shelf, those are the least representative pair available — and the shelf reads perfectly level in the middle.

Why too long is a problem too

A level that does not fit the space is not used, and a heavy one gets left in the van.

The set argument

One set we compare supplies 40, 60 and 100 cm (39.4 in) for less than two good levels bought separately. None of the three is the best of its length, and having the right length beats having the better tool of the wrong one.

What gets asked here

Does the accuracy figure change with length?

The stated figure is per meter, so the error over the tool grows with its length. A 1 mm (0.04 in)/m error is 0.2 mm (0.01 in) over 20 cm (7.9 in) and 1 mm (0.04 in) over a meter.

What about a laser instead?

Different tool. A laser sets a line across a room; a level checks a specific object against gravity. Most people who own a laser still own levels.
