Thirty feet rather than a hundred, which is the point: a reel sized for a tool belt and finishing work, with the chalk in the box.

IRWIN Strait-Line Compact chalk reel with nested hook

IRWIN Chalk reel, 30 ft, 3:1 gearing

Thirty feet rather than a hundred, which is the point: a reel sized for a tool belt and finishing work, with the chalk in the box.

Stated dimension or range
30 ft of line — the shortest on this shelf by a factor of three, where five reels run 100 ft and one runs 150. That is the product, not a shortcoming: a 30 ft reel is a third of the bulk
Functions
A 3:1 gear ratio, stated to give three times faster line retraction. On 30 ft of line that is about twelve turns of the handle for a full rewind
Reference and mounting
Nested hook storage, stated to give compact storage without unwanted hook snagging AND the ability to grab the hook with gloves on. That second half is the useful one: a hook recessed so far it cannot be pinched with a gloved hand is a hook you remove a glove for, in February
Body and fittings
A wide chalk door, stated for ease of fill and for visibility into the reel. It is the nearest thing on this shelf to the chalk level window one reel here publishes, and it needs the door opened
Supplied
Blue chalk included, stated. Blue is the removable color: it brushes off finished surfaces where red does not, which is what makes this a finishing reel
Also stated
No sealing organ and no line diameter. Compact size, stated for increased portability and easy storage

Thirty feet is the product

Not a shortcoming.

Five reels on this shelf are 100 ft and one is 150. This is a third of that, and a third of the bulk.

Thirty feet marks a wall for battens, a ceiling for a grid, a room floor for tiles, a staircase. All indoors, all within reach.

It will not cross a commercial floor or set out a foundation. That is what the others are for.

The question that decides it: which reel ends up in a belt rather than a van. A hundred-foot reel does not.

Blue, because it comes off

Which is why this is the finishing reel.

Red chalk is high-visibility and effectively permanent on porous surfaces. Right on a subfloor or a stud. Wrong on anything that will be seen afterwards.

Blue brushes out of plaster, timber and plasterboard.

IRWIN puts it in the box. Nobody on this shelf names a chalk type or a refill standard, which is the fifth thing this shelf’s introduction asks for.

With gloves on

Which sounds trivial until February.

A hook recessed too deep to pinch means taking a glove off at the start of every snap. Dozens of times a day.

The reels that stay in the van are the ones that are annoying to start.

IRWIN is one of two makers here that say WHY the hook is nested — tangling and snagging — rather than just that it is.

What gets asked here

Is thirty feet enough?

For the work this reel is for, yes. Thirty feet marks a wall for battens, a ceiling for a grid, a floor for tiles in an ordinary room, and a staircase — all indoors, all within reach. What it will not do is cross a commercial floor, run a roof line or set out a foundation, and the other six reels here are 100 ft or 150 for exactly that. The useful question is which reel ends up in a belt rather than a van, and a hundred-foot reel does not.

Why does blue chalk matter?

Because it comes off. Red chalk is high-visibility and effectively permanent on porous surfaces — correct on a subfloor or a stud, wrong on anything that will be seen afterwards. Blue brushes out of plaster, timber and plasterboard, which is why it is the finishing color and why it ships with the compact reel rather than the layout one. IRWIN includes it. Nobody on this shelf names a chalk type or a refill standard, which is the fifth thing this shelf's introduction says to compare.

What does "grab the hook with gloves on" mean in practice?

That the hook sits in a dock shallow enough to pinch with a gloved finger and thumb. It sounds trivial until February: a recessed hook on a cold morning means taking a glove off at the start of every snap, dozens of times a day, and the reels that get left in the van are the ones that are annoying to start. IRWIN is one of two makers here that explain WHY their hook is nested — tangling and snagging — rather than just saying it is.
