AC-only and AC/DC clamps use different physics inside the jaw · review
BENNING True-RMS mini clamp, 400 A review
A trade mini-clamp reading load currents to 400 A with true-RMS, an inrush function and a low-pass filter at around 160 Hz for suppressing the switching noise of motor drives.
What the figures leave us with A specialist filter and inrush measurement in a mini body. Priced as a trade instrument, and specified like one — sparsely.
Four published specifications, and two of them are unusual.
What the manufacturer publishes
Precise measurement of load currents up to 400 A. Inrush current measurement (INRUSH) for motors and lighting installations. A low-pass filter at approximately 160 Hz for suppressing high-frequency pulses on clocked motor drives. True-RMS AC current measurement up to 400 A.
The filter is the specification
Readings on a variable-speed drive are a classic source of confusion: the clamp reports a current far higher than the motor can be drawing, because it is faithfully measuring the switching noise as well as the current. A low-pass filter removes it. Stating the corner frequency — around 160 Hz — is more information than most makers give, and it tells you what the filter will and will not remove.
The rest of the page
There is no jaw dimension, no display description, no category rating and no voltage range. For an instrument at the top of this hub’s price band, that is a terse listing, and the documentation is where the rest lives.

What it has, and what it lacks
Strengths
A stated low-pass filter at around 160 Hz, which suppresses the high-frequency pulses of switched motor drives
Inrush measurement for motors and lighting installations
True-RMS AC measurement up to 400 A
A trade catalog reference from an instrument maker, with matching accessories
On sale across all six markets
Compromises
No measurement category published in the listing
The most expensive clamp here, for the narrowest current range
The listing states four specifications and nothing about the jaw or the display

What gets asked here
What does a low-pass filter do on a clamp meter?
It removes the high-frequency content a switched drive puts on the line, so the clamp reports the fundamental rather than a number inflated by switching noise. BENNING states a filter at approximately 160 Hz for suppressing high-frequency pulses on clocked motor drives.
Why only 400 A?
It is a mini clamp, sized for the cables in a control cabinet rather than a supply main. Four hundred amps covers everything on that side of the installation.
Does BENNING publish a category?
Not in this listing. That is surprising for an instrument brand, and it is the same omission as almost every other electrical instrument here — the figure will be in the documentation.

1000 A AC/DC · 750 V AC / 1000 V DC · inrush · VFD and LoZ modes
The highest current range here at 1000 A AC and DC, with an inrush mode for motor starting currents and VFD and low-impedance modes for drives and ghost voltages.
Best for: Motor and drive work, where inrush and VFD filtering are the two modes that make the reading meaningful.
1 mA resolution · True RMS · color LCD · 19.2 × 4.5 × 3.0 cm (7.6 × 1.8 × 1.2 in)
A pocket clamp with 1 mA resolution for finding leakage and parasitic drain, an automatic multimeter mode, and a color screen — in a body under twenty centimeters long.
Best for: Chasing a parasitic drain on a vehicle, or a leakage current that a normal clamp reads as zero.
An 800 A AC and DC clamp with true-RMS and 6000 counts, positioned by its maker for solar and balcony photovoltaic work — which is where the DC capability earns its keep.
Best for: Solar and battery work, where the current is direct and an AC-only clamp reads nothing at all.
