A different geometry, for a job the flat pencil cannot do.

What the manufacturer publishes

An innovative marking pencil with particularly strong leads for home and trade use, for wood, metal, tile and concrete. Recommended as a construction pencil and deep-hole marker in bright orange, with a tip 6 mm (0.24 in) thin and 43 mm (1.69 in) long. A sharpener integrated into the pencil and a clip for attachment. Seven leads supplied.

The measurement that only this can take

Marking through a fixing hole is the commonest transfer in fitting work — brackets, hinges, rails, back plates. Every alternative is worse: marking around the outside and estimating the center, or holding the item and drilling through it and hoping.

A 6 mm (0.24 in) tip on a 43 mm (1.69 in) reach goes through the hole and touches the wall. That is the entire product.

The trade against a carpenter pencil

Thin leads snap. That is why seven come in the box, and why the flat pencil is still the right tool for everything that does not require reaching.

What gets asked here

What is a deep-hole marker for?

Transferring a position through something. Hold a bracket against a wall, put the marker through its fixing hole, and mark the wall behind it. A flat pencil is too wide to enter the hole and too short to reach the wall.

Does it mark on tile and metal?

THORVALD states wood, metal, tile and concrete. Special leads exist for hard, smooth surfaces where ordinary graphite skates.

Why seven leads?

Because a narrow lead in a hard material breaks. Refills are the consumable, and a marker without spares is a marker with one use left.
