Gakago

Gearing, on the two tools where winding is the work

Both Gakago products here answer the same complaint about long lines.

What it is genuinely good at

Rewinding. The tape states a 3:1 gear ratio with a folding handle; the chalk line comes with 150 g (5.3 oz) of permanent chalk in an aluminum body. On thirty meters, gearing is not a convenience — a reel that takes a minute to wind in is a reel that gets left extended, walked on and eventually cut.

Where it is ordinary

Published tolerances. Neither product states an accuracy class or a nominal tension, which for a 30 m (98 ft) measuring tape is the figure that decides whether two people agree.

The one to look at first

The tape, if you wind a long one in more than twice a day.
