kwb

Small, cheap, and honest about its figure

Two small, cheap products, and both of them state something the rest of their hub does not.

What it is genuinely good at

Not hiding behind adjectives. The mini level publishes 1 mm (0.04 in) per meter — a loose figure honestly stated. The mason line publishes 22 daN breaking and about 4.75 kg (10.5 lb) continuous, which is the only line strength stated anywhere in this catalog.

Where it is ordinary

Ambition. Neither product is trying to be the best of its kind: the level is 20 cm (7.9 in) long and the line is 1.2 mm (0.05 in). They are the cheap, correct version of a simple thing.

The one to look at first

The mason line, for its published load figures. A setting-out line is only straight when it is tensioned, and knowing the working load is what makes tensioning a decision rather than a guess.

    • Publishes both a breaking load (22 daN) and a continuous working load (about 4.75 kg (10.5 lb))
    • Braided rather than twisted, which resists the stretch that makes a line sag differently at each setting
    • Line only — no plumb bob

Best for: Setting out brickwork, paving and tiling, where the line is tensioned between two points and has to stay straight.
