Tolesum

A ratchet, and a specification described with the wrong word

Two instruments that illustrate both halves of this site’s argument in one brand.

What it is genuinely good at

The ratchet. Tolesum’s micrometer is the only one in its hub whose listing describes a ratchet control, and a ratchet is what makes a micrometer repeatable between two people — it closes the spindle at a fixed torque instead of at whatever force the operator applies.

The sound level meter states its accuracy with its reference conditions: ± 1.5 dB at 94 dB and 1 kHz, which is the correct form.

Where it is ordinary

The micrometer listing calls 0.001 mm an accuracy. It is the display step. That is the clearest example in the catalog of resolution being described as precision.

The one to look at first

The sound level meter, for stating its figure properly.
