A three-piece chalk line set with a 30 m (98 ft) line, a stainless hook, a level vial and chalk. Use on a wide variety of surfaces for precise marking. A robust plastic housing keeping the line and chalk safely stored, with an ergonomic shape.
The vial is the reason to pick this one
A chalk line does not know whether it is level. It snaps a straight line between two points, and if those points are not at the same height the line is straight and wrong. A vial in the case lets one person set a horizontal line without a laser and without a separate level.
What is not published
The rewind ratio. Thirty meters of line wound in at one turn per turn of the handle is the reason long lines get left out and damaged, and the two dearer reels here both publish a gear ratio.

What gets asked here
What is the vial for?
Checking that the line you are about to snap is horizontal. Without it, a chalk line is only as level as the two marks you hooked it between — which is fine if those came from a laser, and not if they did not.
Why stainless on the hook?
The hook lives in chalk dust, which is hygroscopic. A plated steel hook rusts, and rust transfers to the line and then to every surface you snap it on.
Does it have geared rewind?
The listing does not say, which normally means direct drive. Over 30 m (98 ft) that is a lot of turns — the Stanley and Tajima reels here state 3:1 and 5:1.
The second slowest gearing on this shelf, chosen deliberately: a steel handle and a large hub for torque rather than turns.
Stated dimension or range
100 ft of heavy-duty braided line, stated to resist fraying and breaking over long distances. No line diameter appears
Functions
A 2:1 gear ratio, stated to rewind twice as fast as a traditional reel. It is the second slowest of the published ratios on this shelf — against 6:1, 5:1, 4:1 and 3:1 above it and 1:1 below — and that is the trade the rest of the specification explains
Body and fittings
A robust steel handle and a large center hub, stated for increased durability, strength and torque, plus a steel docking ring for secure anchoring. It is the only reel on this shelf with steel named for both the handle and the ring
Material
Steel handle and steel docking ring, stated. The shell material is not named
Reference and mounting
A steel docking ring for secure anchoring, stated — a ring rather than a hook, which takes a nail or a screw rather than hooking an edge
Supplied
A large sliding door for easy chalk fill, stated, and a large chalk capacity for fewer refills on large jobs. No chalk is stated as included, and no sealing organ is described

A steel handle, where most reels here are plastic
A steel docking ring rather than a bent hook
2:1, the second slowest ratio published on this shelf
Best for: Heavy chalk, a long line and a reel that will be cranked hard rather than quickly
Thirty feet rather than a hundred, which is the point: a reel sized for a tool belt and finishing work, with the chalk in the box.
Stated dimension or range
30 ft of line — the shortest on this shelf by a factor of three, where five reels run 100 ft and one runs 150. That is the product, not a shortcoming: a 30 ft reel is a third of the bulk
Functions
A 3:1 gear ratio, stated to give three times faster line retraction. On 30 ft of line that is about twelve turns of the handle for a full rewind
Reference and mounting
Nested hook storage, stated to give compact storage without unwanted hook snagging AND the ability to grab the hook with gloves on. That second half is the useful one: a hook recessed so far it cannot be pinched with a gloved hand is a hook you remove a glove for, in February
Body and fittings
A wide chalk door, stated for ease of fill and for visibility into the reel. It is the nearest thing on this shelf to the chalk level window one reel here publishes, and it needs the door opened
Supplied
Blue chalk included, stated. Blue is the removable color: it brushes off finished surfaces where red does not, which is what makes this a finishing reel
Also stated
No sealing organ and no line diameter. Compact size, stated for increased portability and easy storage

Nine dollars seventy, the cheapest geared reel here
3:1 on a short line, so a rewind is a dozen turns
Thirty feet will not cross a room diagonally
Best for: Finishing work indoors, where thirty feet reaches everything and the reel lives in a belt
The only metal-bodied reel on this shelf and the cheapest thing on it — and it doubles as a plumb bob.
Material
A cast aluminum body, stated for increased durability. It is the ONLY metal shell on this shelf — two reels here are ABS and the rest name no material at all — and on a tool that gets dropped off staging that is the difference between a dent and a crack
Stated dimension or range
100 ft of line. No line diameter appears, as on every reel here
Measuring mode
A centreline marker for use as a PLUMB BOB, stated. It is unique on this shelf: the reel hangs from its own line and the marker shows where the center of gravity falls, so one tool sets out a horizontal snap and a vertical drop
Body and fittings
A sliding door for quick and easy chalk refilling, stated, and a built-in storage dock that protects the end hook when not in use
Functions
NO GEAR RATIO IS PUBLISHED. This shelf's introduction calls a geared rewind the whole ergonomic argument of this family, and four of the nine reels here — including this one — give no ratio at all. On 100 ft of line, an ungeared rewind is well over a hundred turns
Supplied
No chalk is stated as included, and no sealing organ is described beyond the sliding door

Cast aluminum, one of only two metal bodies on this shelf
Eight dollars fifty, the cheapest reel here
No gear ratio published at all, on 100 ft of line
Best for: A reel that gets dropped, and anybody who would rather carry one tool than two
The clearest statement of its two faces on this shelf: tenths one side, inches the other, and no claim that either is inverted.
Scale
Graduations on BOTH sides: front in feet and tenths, back in feet and inches — stated exactly that way, and it is the clearest statement of its two faces on this shelf. Note what it does NOT claim: the back is a different UNIT, not an inverted direction. This shelf's introduction distinguishes those two kinds of second scale, and four listings here blur them
Body and fittings
Five telescoping sections reaching 16 ft, with injection-molded sectional joints and high-strength locking buttons stated for extra stability. This shelf's buying tip says to check that every section locks positively; this is one of three rods here that names the locking mechanism at all
Stated dimension or range
16 ft extended, collapsing to 4 ft. Both figures are published — and four feet is the longest fold of the three 16 ft rods on this shelf, where another folds to 42 in
Material
Anodized aluminum sections imprinted with weather and corrosion-resistant inks, stated lightweight aluminum alloy. No thickness figure and no alloy designation appears
Measuring mode
A bubble level, stated in the title. No tripod thread and no receiver clamp
Supplied
Nothing beyond the rod is stated — no bag, no strap, no end caps and no spare parts, where four rods on this shelf include a case

Front and back faces stated plainly: tenths one side, inches the other
Both extended and folded lengths published
Folds to 4 ft, the longest fold of the three 16 ft rods here
Best for: Working with an engineer's level in tenths and a tape in inches, without converting either
The only rod here that is not telescopic and the only one with a target printed on it — a grade rod that lives in a pocket.
Body and fittings
NOT TELESCOPIC. A nylon-coated blade packed in a case like a tape measure, with a heavy-duty end hook. There are no sections and therefore no locking buttons and no creep — which removes the entire failure this shelf's buying tip warns about, at the price of reaching only 6 ft 6 in
Reference and mounting
A BUILT-IN TARGET on two sides, stated. It is the only target on this shelf, and it is the nearest any rod here comes to the receiver question this shelf's introduction asks: a target is the high-contrast pattern an optical level or a receiver is sighted on, and printing one on the blade means nothing has to be clamped to the rod
Scale
Feet and tenths, printed on both sides, stated vertical-reading. Tenths is the engineer's scale, read directly against a level without conversion
Material
A nylon-coated facing, stated not affected by moisture, with a non-glare surface. Non-glare is the detail that matters on a sunlit site: a glossy blade read through a level at twenty meters becomes a white stripe
Stated dimension or range
6 ft 6 in — the shortest on this shelf, where the telescopic rods run 9 to 16 ft. It is also packed, in Keson's words, compact like a tape measure
Supplied
The rod. Stated ideal for foundation work, grading, swimming pools and construction photo records

A built-in target on two sides, unique on this shelf
Six feet six inches, far the shortest reach on this shelf
Best for: Checking a grade without fetching a full-size rod — foundations, pools, drainage and photo records
The only rod here whose scale is cut into the metal rather than printed on it — and the only one that screws to a tripod.
Scale
Laser-etched graduations with bold red foot markers, stated weatherproof and corrosion-resistant and stated to resist fading under UV. It is the ONLY etched scale on this shelf — every other rod here has ink printed or imprinted on the anodizing — and on a tool whose scale IS the product that is the difference between a ten-year rod and a five-year one
Stated dimension or range
16 ft extended, collapsing to a compact 42 in. Forty-two inches is the shortest fold of the three 16 ft rods on this shelf, where another folds to 4 ft — half a foot of difference decides whether it goes behind a van seat
Body and fittings
Five telescopic sections in aerospace-grade aluminum alloy, stated lightweight and sturdy. No thickness figure is published, where two rods on this shelf give one
Reference and mounting
A REINFORCED BASE THREAD, stated to connect to most survey tripod mounts. It is unique on this shelf: every other rod here is held by hand or stood on its foot, and a rod on a tripod is a rod that does not lean while you walk round to read it
Measuring mode
An integrated vial bubble level, stated to guarantee vertical accuracy, and a front engineer scale in feet/10ths for laser level compatibility, with a special measuring scale on the back for overall height reading. Whether that back face is inverted or simply in other units is not stated
Supplied
The rod, a padded carrying case with a moisture-resistant lining, an adjustable shoulder strap and protective end caps. The end caps are the detail: an open telescopic section fills with grit, and grit is what makes a section stick
