The mark that works where a pencil gives up.

What the manufacturer publishes

Multi-surface marking chalks allowing writing and drawing on wood, metal, stone, concrete and tile. A pack of twelve professional marker chalks in red, each clothed in a paper sleeve. A practical hexagonal shape preventing rolling, with a diameter of 12 mm (0.47 in) and a length of 120 mm (4.72 in).

Where graphite fails

A pencil works by leaving graphite in the surface texture. On smooth, dark, wet or dusty material there is nowhere for it to go, and the line is invisible from a meter away. Wax and chalk crayons sit on top instead, which is why every trade that works on masonry carries them.

The paper sleeve

It keeps the crayon together as it wears and keeps your hand clean. Both matter more on a full box than they sound on one crayon.

What gets asked here

Why hexagonal?

Because a round crayon rolls, and a crayon that rolls off a joist at height is gone. It is the same reasoning behind flat carpenter pencils, and it matters more than it sounds.

When is chalk better than a pencil?

On anything dark, rough or dusty. Graphite disappears on stone, brick and dark timber; a wax or chalk crayon writes over the dust rather than into it.

Does the mark come off?

The listing does not say. Treat a red marking crayon as difficult to remove from a finished surface, and use it where the mark will be cut, covered or weathered away.
