MIB Germany DIN 862 digital caliper, 150 mm (5.91 in) review

The only caliper in this hub that names the standard behind its figure: ± 0.02 mm (0.001 in) to DIN 862, with 0.01 mm resolution and the four standard measuring functions.

What the figures leave us with The caliper that specifies itself correctly. Named standard, resolution and accuracy stated apart. That is what the money buys.

One caliper in this hub names a standard. It is this one.

What the manufacturer publishes

Precise measurements at ± 0.02 mm (0.001 in) to DIN 862, described as ideal for professional applications. A large LCD with 0.01 mm or 0.0005 inch resolution, stated as delivering precise results even in hard-to-reach measuring positions. Four-way measuring function: outside, inside, depth and step. Millimeter and inch switching.

Why naming the standard is the specification

Any manufacturer can print ± 0.02 mm (0.001 in). A standard defines what that figure means: over what range, at what temperature, measured how. DIN 862 does that for calipers. A tolerance quoted against it is a claim with a defined meaning; a tolerance quoted alone is a number.

For most work, either is fine. For a measurement that ends up in a report, on a drawing, or in a dispute, the difference is the whole point.

Resolution and accuracy, stated apart

This listing gives 0.01 mm as the display step and ± 0.02 mm (0.001 in) as the accuracy, in two separate sentences. Elsewhere in this hub the two are merged, omitted, or — on one micrometer — the resolution is called the accuracy outright. Reading them apart is the single most useful habit in this category.

What it has, and what it lacks

Strengths

  • States ± 0.02 mm (0.001 in) to DIN 862 — a named standard, not a house claim
  • Publishes resolution (0.01 mm) and accuracy (± 0.02 mm (0.001 in)) as separate figures, which most of this hub does not
  • Four measuring functions: outside, inside, depth and step
  • A large LCD stated as readable in awkward measuring positions

Compromises

  • The most expensive caliper here, at more than double the HARDELL for the same stated tolerance
  • No ingress rating stated, unlike the ORTHLAND
  • The material is not described beyond the measurement claims

What gets asked here

What is DIN 862?

The German standard covering vernier and digital calipers, including permissible errors. MIB states its ± 0.02 mm (0.001 in) figure to that standard. We report that as a manufacturer statement — this site does not verify conformity.

Why pay double the HARDELL for the same ± 0.02 mm (0.001 in)?

Because the figures are not saying the same thing. HARDELL states ± 0.02 mm (0.001 in) as its own claim; MIB states it against a named standard that defines how the figure is established. Whether that difference is worth twenty-five euros depends on whether anyone will ever ask you to justify a measurement.

Does it publish resolution separately?

Yes — 0.01 mm or 0.0005 inch, given separately from the ± 0.02 mm (0.001 in) accuracy. That separation is the mark of a properly written specification and it is rare in this hub.

What buyers actually choose

Amazon reports what buyers took in the month before this page was last checked: at least 200.

The figure is a floor, rounded by Amazon, and read through Keepa — it says what buyers picked, not what a maker claims.
