ORTHLAND Glass-scale digital caliper, 150 mm (5.91 in) review
A caliper using a glass grating scale rather than the usual capacitive strip, which the maker states resists humidity and magnetism, in an IP54 hardened stainless body.
What the figures leave us with The workshop-conditions caliper. Glass scale and IP54 answer real problems; the missing tolerance figure is the price.
A caliper specified against the environment rather than against the part.
What the manufacturer publishes
A specially processed glass grating scale, stated to prevent the accuracy of the caliper being affected by ambient humidity and magnetism, with a built-in over-speed chip. A Teflon scale strip described as resistant to high and low temperatures, corrosion and friction. A zinc-alloy measuring head and a thickened rule body in hardened, fine-ground stainless steel at around 3.6 mm (0.14 in). IP54 double protection against dust, water spots and oil, with an explicit instruction not to use it in water. One-button metric and imperial conversion, and a zero key.
Why the scale technology is a real specification
Most digital calipers read position capacitively, and capacitive scales are sensitive to exactly what a workshop has: moisture films, oil, and magnetized steel. The symptom is not a broken caliper — it is a caliper that reads confidently and wrongly, or jumps a millimeter when slid. An optical glass scale is the standard answer, and it is normally found much higher up the price range.
What is still missing
No accuracy figure. For a tool sold on measurement integrity, that is the specification you would most expect to see, and it is not there.

What it has, and what it lacks
Strengths
A glass grating scale, stated to resist the humidity and magnetism that upset capacitive calipers
IP54 double protection against dust, water spots and oil — the only ingress rating in this hub
A thickened hardened stainless body, stated at around 3.6 mm (0.14 in)
An over-speed chip, so a fast slide does not lose count
A Teflon scale strip stated as resistant to temperature, corrosion and friction
Compromises
No accuracy figure published anywhere in the listing
Heavier than the composite and thin-bodied calipers here
The maker states it must not be used in water despite the IP54 claim

What gets asked here
What is a glass grating scale?
An optical scale read by a sensor, rather than the capacitive strip most digital calipers use. ORTHLAND states it prevents accuracy being affected by ambient humidity and magnetism — the two things that make a cheap caliper jump or drift in a real workshop.
What does the over-speed chip do?
A capacitive caliper slid quickly can lose track of its position and read wrong afterwards, silently. The maker states an over-speed chip guards against that.
Does IP54 mean I can wash it?
No. The maker states IP54 protection against dust, water spots and oil, and adds explicitly not to use it in water. IP54 is splash resistance, not immersion.

Who should pick this one, among measuring instruments
A workshop where oil, swarf and damp are normal and a capacitive caliper keeps misbehaving.
Amazon reports what buyers took in the month before this page was last checked: at least 100.
The figure is a floor, rounded by Amazon, and read through Keepa — it says what buyers picked, not what a maker claims.

± 0.02 mm (0.001 in) to DIN 862 · 0.01 mm resolution · four functions
The only caliper in this hub that names the standard behind its figure: ± 0.02 mm (0.001 in) to DIN 862, with 0.01 mm resolution and the four standard measuring functions.
Best for: Work where the measurement has to be defensible, and naming the standard is part of that.
150 mm (5.91 in) · ± 0.02 mm (0.001 in) stated · hardened stainless · four modes
A hardened stainless caliper stating ± 0.02 mm (0.001 in) over 0–150 mm (0 to 5.91 in), splash and dust protected, with the four standard measuring modes and a zero button.
Best for: The value pick: a published tolerance and hardened jaws, without paying for a named standard.
