Voltcraft CAT III 600 V clamp meter review
The only clamp meter in this hub that publishes a complete safety rating: CAT III 600 V AC/DC, with true-RMS, eight measuring functions and a non-contact voltage detector.
What the figures leave us with The one to buy for installation work, and the only clamp here whose safety specification you can read before buying.
One clamp meter in this hub tells you what it is built to survive.
What the manufacturer publishes
CAT III 600 V AC/DC. 4000 points. True RMS. Eight measuring functions: current, voltage, resistance, temperature, capacitance, frequency, continuity testing and more, with automatic ranging. A built-in non-contact voltage detector. Positioned as suited to the maintenance of machines and control cabinets.
Why this specification is the one that decides the purchase
Everything else on a clamp meter is capability: more counts, more functions, a wider current range. The category is the only specification that describes what happens when something goes wrong — a fault current, a switching transient, a motor starting on the same board. An instrument without a published category is not necessarily unsafe; it is unplaceable, because nothing tells you where it belongs.
Across ten electrical instruments in this part of the site, two listings publish a category. This is the more complete of the two.
What it gives up
Fewer counts than the cheaper Proster, and no stated jaw opening. Both are real, and neither is the reason to choose a clamp meter for a distribution board.

What it has, and what it lacks
Strengths
Publishes a complete category rating — CAT III 600 V AC/DC — which nine of the ten electrical instruments around it do not
Eight measuring functions: current, voltage, resistance, temperature, capacitance, frequency, continuity and more
True RMS with 4000 points and automatic ranging
A built-in non-contact voltage detector
Positioned by the maker for machine and control-cabinet maintenance
Compromises
Four thousand points, fewer than the 6000 of the cheaper Proster
No jaw opening dimension published

What gets asked here
What does CAT III 600 V mean?
It is the manufacturer's statement that the instrument is built to survive the transient over-voltages found in fixed installation work — distribution boards, busbars, fixed wiring — at up to 600 V. The category and the voltage are one specification, and Voltcraft states both. We report the marking; this site does not assess conformity.
Is a category rating a quality grade?
No, and this is the most common misreading in the category. It describes the energy the instrument is built to withstand at a point in an installation, not how well it measures.
Are 4000 points a downgrade?
It is a lower display resolution than the 6000-count meters here. For a clamp reading load currents to the nearest tenth of an amp, it is rarely the limiting factor.
Our score
8.1/ 10
The one to buy for installation work, and the only clamp here whose safety specification you can read before buying.

Who should pick this one, among measuring instruments
Distribution boards and control cabinets — the work a stated CAT III rating exists for.
Accessories stated to fit this instrument
Listed because the accessory names this instrument itself.
Specifications: the manufacturer sheet for measuring instruments and the matching Amazon product page. Prices and availability: Keepa. Every figure on this page names its source.
A trade mini-clamp reading load currents to 400 A with true-RMS, an inrush function and a low-pass filter at around 160 Hz for suppressing the switching noise of motor drives.
Best for: Motor and lighting installations where the drive noise is the reason previous readings made no sense.
1000 A AC/DC · 750 V AC / 1000 V DC · inrush · VFD and LoZ modes
The highest current range here at 1000 A AC and DC, with an inrush mode for motor starting currents and VFD and low-impedance modes for drives and ghost voltages.
Best for: Motor and drive work, where inrush and VFD filtering are the two modes that make the reading meaningful.
1 mA resolution · True RMS · color LCD · 19.2 × 4.5 × 3.0 cm (7.6 × 1.8 × 1.2 in)
A pocket clamp with 1 mA resolution for finding leakage and parasitic drain, an automatic multimeter mode, and a color screen — in a body under twenty centimeters long.
Best for: Chasing a parasitic drain on a vehicle, or a leakage current that a normal clamp reads as zero.
