VORKIN Ball-sensor moisture meter, 40 mm (1.57 in) depth review

A pinless meter with a ball sensor reading to a stated 40 mm (1.57 in) depth, showing DRY, MID or WET alongside a value, with an adjustable moisture alarm.

What the figures leave us with The non-destructive one with a stated depth. Good for surveying a finished room; not a diagnosis.

A meter for surfaces you are not allowed to make holes in.

What the manufacturer publishes

A ball sensor for non-destructive area scanning, detecting moisture without damage. Precise depth measurement to 40 mm (1.57 in) for wood and building materials. An adjustable moisture alarm with a DRY / MID / WET indication. Hold, MAX/MIN and temperature display.

What “non-destructive” is worth

A pin meter on a finished wall leaves two holes every time it is used, and a survey means dozens of readings. That rules pins out of any occupied, decorated or rented space — which is most of the places where a damp question actually arises.

The trade you accept

A capacitive field does not distinguish. Forty millimeters of wall containing a metal conduit, a mesh, or a foil-backed board will read wet whatever the moisture content is. The technique is to take many readings and compare them, and to treat a single high reading as a place to look rather than as a finding.

Nothing here diagnoses a damp problem. A moisture reading is one input among several, and interpreting them belongs to someone qualified to do it.

What it has, and what it lacks

Strengths

  • Non-destructive: a ball sensor leaves no holes in a finished surface
  • A stated measuring depth of 40 mm (1.57 in), which reaches past a surface skim
  • DRY / MID / WET banding alongside the reading, so the number is interpreted for you
  • An adjustable moisture alarm, hold, max/min and a temperature display

Compromises

  • No accuracy figure published
  • A pinless sensor averages whatever is under it, including metal
  • Not found on the American market

What gets asked here

What is a ball sensor?

A rounded pinless probe that couples a capacitive field into the material. Its shape lets it sit in corners, joints and against curved surfaces where a flat sensor plate cannot make contact.

What does 40 mm (1.57 in) depth actually mean?

The field penetrates roughly that far, and the reading is an average over everything in that volume. It reaches past a plaster skim into the substrate — and it will also happily average a metal conduit into the result.

Is the DRY / MID / WET banding trustworthy?

It is a translation of the reading into three bands using the maker's thresholds. Use it as a first sort and the numeric comparison against a known-dry area as the real evidence.
