Pin and pinless meters answer two different questions · review
GERUI Pin moisture meter, seven scales review
A pin meter publishing both its accuracy and its resolution — ± 2.0% and 0.10% — with seven calibrated scales split between four wood groups and three building materials.
What the figures leave us with Two published figures and seven scales at eleven euros. The best-specified meter in this hub.
The cheapest meter here, and the one that publishes the most.
What the manufacturer publishes
An accuracy of ± 2.0% with a resolution of 0.10%. Two modes measuring both wood and building material, with seven calibrated scales: four for wood, where the stated maximum moisture range for wood-based materials is 6 to 70%, and three for building materials. A temperature measuring range of 0 °C (32 °F) to 50 °C (122 °F) and an ambient humidity range of 20 to 90% RH. Stated uses include timber, firewood, brick and paper.
Why the scales matter more than the accuracy
Moisture meters work by measuring electrical resistance, and resistance at a given moisture content depends on what the material is. A meter with one scale is right for one material and consistently wrong for everything else — not by a little, but by several percentage points. Seven scales is a real compensation, and it is more useful than a tighter accuracy figure on a single scale.
The two holes
Every pin meter leaves them. On firewood, a joist or a subfloor that is irrelevant. On a finished surface it is not, and the ball-sensor meters in this hub exist for exactly that case.

What it has, and what it lacks
Strengths
Publishes accuracy (± 2.0%) and resolution (0.10%) as separate figures
Seven calibrated scales: four wood groups and three building material groups
A stated moisture range up to 70% for wood-based materials

Compromises
Pins leave two holes in whatever is measured
Species compensation is by group rather than by species

What gets asked here
Why do wood scales come in groups?
Electrical resistance at a given moisture content varies by species. A meter with one scale is calibrated for one wood and approximate for the rest. Four groups is a coarse compensation and far better than none.
Pins or pinless?
Pins measure resistance between two points at a known depth, which is accurate and leaves two holes. Pinless meters read a field over an area, leave no marks and average whatever is behind — including metal. For firewood and joinery, pins.
What does ± 2.0% mean here?
It is the stated accuracy on the moisture percentage, published separately from the 0.10% display resolution. Both figures on one page is unusual in this category.

Who should pick this one, among measuring instruments
Timber and firewood, where a pin reading at a known depth is exactly the right measurement.
Accessories stated to fit this instrument
Listed because the accessory names this instrument itself.
Amazon reports what buyers took in the month before this page was last checked: at least 300.

Wood 5–50% · building materials 1.5–33% · hold · auto-off after 3 minutes
A handheld detector publishing two separate measuring ranges — 5 to 50% for wood and 1.5 to 33% for building materials — with a hold function for readings taken out of sight.
Best for: Quick checks on wood and masonry where the comparison between two spots is the answer.
Pinless · to 40 mm (1.57 in) · round probe for corners and joints · hold, max, min
A pinless masonry meter reading to 40 mm (1.57 in) with a rounded probe shaped for corners, joints and narrow spaces, with hold, max and min functions.
Best for: Masonry surveys where readings have to be taken in corners and along joints.
